Joint Commission Environment of Care (EOC) Mock Surveys

What is a Mock Survey?

An EOC Mock Survey is a simulated accreditation survey, focused on assessing an organization's preparedness and compliance within the Environment of Care. These comprehensive reviews help organizations identify potential weaknesses before a formal inspection, which provides ample time to address and correct the issues leading to a continued state of readiness throughout the survey cycle. Environment of Care Mock Surveys Focus on everything from Fire and Life Safety, Medical Equipment, Emergency Power, Workplace Violence, and Overall Cleanliness.

Is an EOC Mock Survey necessary?

We believe the answer is yes. Mock surveys are simulated assessments that mirrors the format and standards of an official survey. Mock surveys provide a valuable opportunity to assess your readiness for a Joint Commission or similar accreditation survey. These evaluations offer a comprehensive review of your Environment of Care, identifying any potential risks to patient safety or compliance that could impact survey outcomes.

For organizations without the resources to maintain a dedicated, full-time compliance team, an external assessment can be especially beneficial. A fresh, objective perspective often reveals areas for improvement that may be overlooked internally.

Ideally, a mock survey confirms that your organization has strong programs, effective processes, and the right personnel in place to meet accreditation standards confidently.

How does AjudaHC conduct an EOC Mock survey?

AjudaHC takes an approach similar to that of The Joint Commission, CMS, and other accrediting bodies by thoroughly reviewing your compliance documentation and assessing the physical Environment of Care. We can schedule the visit in advance or conduct an unannounced survey to simulate the real-world pressure of an actual accreditation inspection—ensuring your staff is always prepared.

Unlike traditional "gotcha"-style audits, our EOC Mock Surveys are intentionally more relaxed and consultative. We believe it’s far better for us to identify issues before someone else does. With that in mind, we work to find as many deficiencies and safety hazards as we can during our visit.

We understand that you may not like the results but our ultimate goal is to work together to create and maintain the safest environment possible for your patients. While your success during an accreditation survey is very important to us, patient safety is our top priority.

What is a document review?

The document review portion of a Joint Commission Environment of Care Mock Survey is designed to look through your inspection, testing and maintenance documents for fire alarms, suppression, generators, and more to ensure that you are complying with the required testing timeframes. These reviews also look to make sure that all of the correct data is being collected, by the right people, at the right times and that they are using the correct codes and standards to do so.

What happens during the building tour?

AjudaHC tours your facility looking to ensure compliance with a wide variety of Joint Commission and NFPA Codes and Standards so hazards within the Environment of Care can be discovered and eliminated. Part of the process during EOC Mock Surveys surveys is to look above the ceiling to find firestopping and construction issues, open junction boxes, items on sprinkler pipes, and more. Below the ceiling, we are testing doors and pressure relationships, looking for broken ceiling tiles, dirty sprinkler heads, general cleanliness, etc. AjudaHC is looking for any potential hazard in the Environment of Care that could put patient safety or accreditation compliance in jeopardy.
